Villa Merlo - Summary in English

Villa Merlo (Merlo slott) is situated in Timrå north of Sundsvall. The villa was built as a summer residence for the sawmill owner Fredrik Bünsow 1883-1885. Architechts were Isak Gustaf Clason and Fritz Eckert. Among Clason's later works are Nordiska museet and the Market Hall of Östermalm in Stockholm.

The estate is a hotspot in Swedish business history. Fredrik Bünsow founded Skönviks AB, a leading forest industry in the 19th century and early 20th century. It merged into SCA in 1929, a holding company founded by Ivar Kreuger, who visited Merlo that year for the planning.

SCA developed into a successful business and today offers personal care products, tissue, packaging, publication papers and solid-wood products in more than 90 countries and has 50,000 employees.

Since 1951 the villa houses the impressive central archives of the multinational company SCA. It is a splendid resource for research in the industrial era and history of northern Sweden.
